The values

How the values work

Ace/Five is the two-rank betting count popularized in modern explainers (including Wizard of Odds). It is related to, but not the same as, Thorp’s and Revere’s five-count ideas — those counted fives only. Ace/Five counts both ranks, which is why it balances: four fives and four aces per deck.

Use it as a betting count. It is not a playing-strategy count. Do not paste Revere Five Count efficiency numbers onto this map — those describe a different system.

The math

Running count, then true count

Start at zero

Ace/Five is balanced. Start at 0. Four fives at +1 and four aces at −1 cancel over a 52-card deck.

True count is still running count divided by remaining decks if you want a per-deck betting number. Many players just raise the bet when the running count is high in a shoe game.

Efficiency

Why the numbers look like that

We do not publish BC, PE, or IC for Ace/Five. Revere’s five-count tables (~BC .43 / PE .15) describe fives only. Wizard of Odds and other Ace/Five write-ups do not agree on a second corroborated table for aces and fives together, so the locker shows —.

In the app

Practice Ace/Five on iPhone

Ace/Five is free. Memorize two ranks, then keep a running count. True Count is still there if you want the conversion habit.

  • Memorize

Drill the Ace/Five values until every rank is automatic.

  • Running Count

Add every card as it comes off the shoe. Start at 0. A full deck returns to 0.

  • True Count

Divide the running count by remaining decks. Betting and deviations use this number.
